Sarah Wilshaw-Sparkes

I’m a highly experienced strategy consultant who works at Board and senior management team level. The issues I address typically lead to new paths to business growth and operating effectiveness.

What I do is serious, and I work hard to deliver value to my clients, but I always bring a little humour, too.

I have worked for over two decades in business strategy consulting with clients in New Zealand, Australia, Asia and North America. Typically, I engage with the Boards and senior management teams of large private and public sector organisations, tackling the kind of ‘bet your business’ questions that have the potential to deliver significant new growth and value.

Wherever possible, I’ve sought out projects in consumer-driven industries. It’s hard not to be something of a generalist in New Zealand, though, and my local experience runs deep in the manufacturing and distribution of industrial, building and other B2B materials.

For many years, I worked with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), based out of their Auckland office.  Alongside active casework, I also supported BCG’s Consumer and Retail practice group in Australasia. I have been fully independent since 2010.

I came to New Zealand at the end of the 80’s with an MBA from London Business School and three years in brand management in the UK with Unilever’s margarine business where I learned more than was healthy about white fats and oils. This early experience is the source of my long-lasting interest in consumer goods and services and all kinds of retail.

Beyond consulting

I co-founded Professionelle with another BCG alumna in 2007. Professionelle is targeted at professional women and offers both a unique online resource and offline networking and career development services. This exposure to the challenges of small business development has broadened my business experience.

Beyond work

I have ten years’ experience on not-for-profit Boards in education, including the successful start-up and profitable operation of a new Montessori primary unit. I am a published short story writer of romantic fiction and also of two independently published Gothic romantic suspenses. I relax by researching and writing family histories and by rowing round and round Lake Pupuke on Auckland’s North Shore.
